Typography Work: How can you write ENVY without any words but just a concept?

I have to make this poster for my Typography class in College. In which I have to write a poem but well use typographic/calligraphic skills, done by hand, not in computer. I do have my ideas but I don't know how to make a concept or an image of envy or jealousy. I had think of stencils but I just think that's vague, probably many in my class will make the same. What calligraphic image can I do to show envy? or ideas.

  1. Hmm... I can think of 2 aproaches. First, get to the roots of the concepts of jealousy or envy to find an appropriate visual direction(s). Do some research about those concepts are they relate to literature, history, religion, etc. What comes to my mind when I hear those words are the 7 Deadly Sins, and then I think of illuminated manuscripts and religious calligraphy. Second, I think of the literal definitions of envy ("a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions, etc." dictionary.com). Maybe you could set the type in a playful way that physically mimics envy. Like, the "e" could be very far away from "nvy", and the descender of the "y" (the stroke that sticks down) could be reaching out for the "e." I know that you're trying to communicate envy without the actual word, so maybe you could make all the letters very covetous of eachother? be playful and try a lot of things!
